The cashier is right - It’s not Chinese New Year yet. And yes, a lot of people celebrate it.

The cashier is wrong - The guy said “Happy New Year” and obviously meant a new year had begun on the Gregorian calendar, by which both he and the cashier operate. I doubt the cashier pays her taxes on “Chinese April 15″. He didn’t say “Happy Chinese New Year!”… so no, the cashier was not right. Tradition and culture don’t supersede real life.
