You don’t know how to use the appropriate “by”

In editing the text people send me, on occasion I miss a word that needs to be fixed.
Saying that I don’t know how to use the word “by” makes you seem like a dick, and I’m sure that’s not the case. In the future, you may want to think about how your phraseology comes across to your reader.
